2. VRAY for C4D - Quote :
Introduction & Overview:
VRay is the professional render engine by Chaos group.
The simple description of VRAY for C4D is that it is a professional render system for MAXON CINEMA 4DTM and BODYPAINT 3DTM software. However that is where the simplistic description ends. This robust rendering system is a true wonder that allows the user to set up realistic scenes with lighting that defies description with its realistic look and feel. Stefan Laub teamed up with well known CINEMA 4D plugin programmer Renato Tarabella and Daniele Ficini to develop the bridge between CINEMA 4D and Vray. Released on September 17, 2007, the bridge is already moving forward to include many more options and capabilities thanks to on-going work by the developers. A terrific forum for users has opened here where you will find free Vray shaders, help with the learning curve, sample scenes, tutorials and much more.
You buy VRay for CINEMA 4D from VrayforC4D.com. The price is 790 Euro"s which is approximately US $1170.
Installation is a snap and once you receive your license key you are ready to begin. For still images you will begin by setting up your basic scene, then adding a camera and your lights. CINEMA 4D´s basic lights are used as well as the camera. However, a Vray light and a Vray Physical Camera tag will be added to each respectively and this is where the magic begins.
Overview:
There are certain areas where the Vray settings and functions will show up after installation. You will find some new Vray tags to apply to your lights and cameras plus tags for displacement, motion blur and compositing. You will have a material converter in your plugins menu which will easily and automatically convert each material in your material manager to Vray materials which can then be used in your scene. One of the most important things to set up before you begin is your units of measure. Vray works best when your units of measure are set to centimeters. That is because when you are working in centimeters you are reproducing physically correct light distribution. Here"s what the Vray tags look like.
VRay tags
You will find that in order to utilize Vray for C4D to its fullest, you cannot use regular CINEMA 4D materials, but you will need to either convert existing materials or create and use new Vray materials. This may seem disappointing at first, but it is very easy to remedy. By selecting File/Vray Mat from within the material manager you will then be presented with options for setting up your new Vray material. CINEMA 4D users will find that most of the same properties exist as in regular CINEMA 4D materials with a few new additions and a somewhat different layout. Your color channel is now the diffuse channel and the alpha channel is labeled material weight. Of note at this time you will find that your alpha or "Material Weight" channel does not perform in the same way that the normal CINEMA 4D alpha channel does. The colors are basically reversed which means that black areas are visible and white areas are transparent. This will be corrected in a later version but until then a work-around is to set your Material Weight channel to a layer texture and in those options, right click on the image text and select "Invert Image". You can also use layers and reverse the black point and white point values. This will take care of things and enable the alpha image to work correctly.
VRay material
Let´s begin by taking a look at some of the basic settings you will have when adding lights and cameras. After adding a light or a camera you will then add a new Vray Light or VrayPhysicalCamera tag depending on what you have added to your scene. By clicking on the light or camera tag itself in the object manager, you will be presented with a number of finite settings in the attribute manager which will allow you to control all of the settings for each light and/or the camera. A number of light types are supported including area, spot, omni, infinite and parallel. It doesn´t stop there however. Within each of these types of light settings you have the option of even more control over each light. A sunlight setting will allow you to create a physical sun and sky while using the IES light with an IES file will allow you to set up track or wall type lighting just to name a couple. These lights are perfect for showrooms or a soft wall light in a living room or even a recessed light setup over a kitchen sink.

You will quickly find that the depth of these settings for your lights are amazing and the control that you have over the type, look, color, caustics and much more truly allows for finite adjustment. Likewise, the camera settings contain many adjustments that you will recognize if you are familiar with using an SLR 35 mm camera. These settings will control the view as well as having an effect over lighting and ultimate output.
You will find a large amount of options in your render settings all concerned with Vray. In your render settings window under Effects/Post Effects if you choose Vray Bridge, you will activate a number of tabs and functions that will allow for the ultimate control of your scene and its lighting and rendering. I found that this area is the most difficult to get a handle on. The variety and depth of settings here can be very confusing to those just learning how to set up the different rendering functions. However I will go over some of them with you further on in the review to give you an overview of the different areas and what they include.
After choosing the settings that you prefer in the render settings, you can then render and see what a simple setup will produce as seen in the image with the robot. Now that we have set up a simple scene, I´ll show you some of the in depth settings and what they allow you to control in the following sections.
