Gothic Quote : Gothic is a 3D Action-Role-Playing Game, similar in gameplay and presentation to Origin's Ultima IX: Ascension. Orcish Hordes are invading human territory. Therefore the king needs a lot of ore to forge enough weapons for his army to stand against this threat. Prisoners from all over the empire are imprisoned in a large magical sphere where they have to work in the mines for the king. Your character is one of these prisoners. Thrown into the hostile area inside the magical barrier, he has to survive in battles against dangerous creatures, join one of the prisoner camps, and ultimately escape from the prison. Gothic combines real-time, action-based combat with RPG character development. You gain experience points for defeating enemies and completing quests. The nameless hero who accomplished this, however, had to pay a high price: he lies buried under a pile of rocks. Until he is revived by renegade mage Xardas. A new threat is rising: evil armies, led by dragons, are gathering in the old mine valley. Someone has to take the news to the people of Khorinis and help them in defeating this menace. But the people have their own problems: the war against the Orcs is still raging on on the mainland, and the king has sent his paladins to Khorinis to make sure that the mining of the magical ore continues, now that the prisoners have fled the mine. Many of the former prisoners have now become mercenaries, hired by the farmers on the island, who refuse to obey the king and his minions any longer. Violent conflict seems inevitable. The 3D RPG Gothic II uses a refined version of the original Gothic's engine and controls. The world is many times larger than in the first game: the mine valley (which has changed a lot in the meantime) is still accessible, but is only a relatively small part of the game now. As in the original game, the player can join one of three different factions, with the choice influencing the player character's abilities, opening up different quests and changing the details of the story. The available factions are the city militia, the mercenaries and the fire mages. Combat and magic are action-based and happen in real time, as in the previous game. Gothic II also simulates a functioning world, where every NPC follows a daily schedule, and many objects are usable. With the gods Innos and Beliar finally destroyed, Xardas predicted a thousand years of peace. They envisioned an era of rebuilding and understanding between the races of men and orcs. But instead out of the ashes of the Orcwar a new empire began to rise. In the north Gorn, ruler of Gotha in the north, assembled an army and started to rage war against Thorus. Thorus, the new ruler of the Orcs, of course couldn't just sit on his throne in Trelis and let Gorn slaughter the Orcs. So he himself began to attack the caravans and outposts around Geldern. Meanwhile Lee, the ruler of the kingdom in the east, decided to stay out of the skirmish and wait it out. Inog and Anog, the rulers of the lands surrounding Silden in the west, on the other hand are not in any position to stand up against Thorus or Gorn. Watching all this from a different plane of existence, the nameless hero decided to go back to Myrtana. Xardas tries to stop him and a battle ensues from which neither comes out as the victor. In the end Xardas vanishes and the nameless hero wakes up in a bed in Silden, under the distrustful eyes of Anog - and without his former strength. So the player once again takes over the control of the nameless hero in order to enforce the peace and he needs to decide which side he will be on. The gameplay remains the same as in the original game although the world is much smaller now and some changes are noticeable in it. Looking over the hero's shoulders, the player still takes on quests, kills monsters and ultimately gains experience to advance to the next level. This in return grants access to talent points to invest into different abilities like forging or learning how to fight with two weapons against the countless, but already known, enemies. To fight against them, the player again has access to countless melee and ranged weapons, armor and useful potions which he either finds or makes himself during the course of the adventure. The only real change can be found in the combat system which features an overhauled parry system and now heavily depends on the available stamina because if none is available, the hero can't swing his sword anymore and is totally defenseless. He can also perform a new, shooter-like strife move which allows him to get quickly out of harms way.
